Hello! I’m so excited to have you here!
Life can be tough and the older and wiser we get, we can still get bowled over!
Getting older can feel like being a skittle in a bowling alley where life’s major milestones and unexpected challenges are the heavy bowling balls rushing down the lane.
But what if instead of feeling like the target waiting for impact, we can learn how to absorb the movement of the ball and to softly bend and allow the ball to glide ahead.
Discovering that the energy heading towards you doesn’t just exist to knock you down; it is also the very same energy that keeps the game rolling feels liberating. When life’s heavy events arrive, you just learn to lean into the curve and continue moving forward.
When you look up and realise you aren’t just staring at the oncoming ball; you are looking at the entire brightly lit lane. By navigating life’s often challenging experiences, a fresh perspective can be achieved, where we see the whole game before us and recognise that every frame can be viewed as a fresh start – a second bloom.

I’m Susan
I’m an Accredited CBT therapist and Coach, I hold diplomas in Group facilitating, Mindfulness and Supervision. I have worked in mental health for over 20 years and spent several years working in the NHS for IAPT. I have also run my own successful CBT Therapy and Coaching Practice in London, Surrey and West Sussex for over a decade.
I have supported women and mental health in various stages of life, firstly pregnancy – both pre and post birth, assisting a specialist NHS unit and also with women in menopause and post-menopause. Working with women really appealed to me as I have four daughters of my own and I have experienced both ends of the spectrum, pregnancy and birth and getting older and personally experiencing menopause.
As I have got older and my children have flown the nest, I have become drawn to supporting women at times of changes and transformations in their lives. In the last few years this has become more and more personal:
In my career and in my private life I felt feisty, intelligent and self-assured, I felt I had got the hang of life, and I was playing the game well! But then a series of life events hit me hard and I lost my spark!
These included caring for my ageing parent with dementia which soon turned into bereavement. The feeling of complete loss after decades of parenting when my children left home and I was left with an empty nest and a complete lack of knowing who I now was. The big one for me was the loss of my spouse and the subsequent adaptation to huge changes in my identity and living arrangements. It was a lot to bear, and I felt myself buckling under the pressure. But time is a great healer as they say and I was able to re-build my resilience and determination to live a better more focused life for myself and my loved ones, brick by brick.
I created the Art of Looking Up because I kept meeting women who were facing their own challenges and finding their spark beginning to ebb away. These were women working through transitions and changes that I had already worked through.
We are building this sanctuary from the very first brick. You aren’t just an anonymous reader on a mailing list; your presence shapes the heart of this space.
